Caribbean Lowlands
1B-3 Virgen del Socorro was located about at the epicenter of the 2009 earthquake, and suffered significant damage. It is currently not worth visiting to look for birds. The hummingbird feeders at La Cinchona suffered a similar fate, as this town was almost completely destroyed. Also note that Rt.126, which runs from the La Paz Waterfall Gardens down to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí was destroyed in places. The government is hoping to have repairs on the road finished by late 2010.

Coastline
5-3 A recent storm has changed the flow of the Tárcoles River. While it used to run parallel to the beach for quite a ways, it now cuts directly to the ocean. This has isolated many of the shorebirds and terns on the opposite bank of the river.
